NASCAR Chicago 165 5. 7. 2025-6. 7. 2025

HISTORY OF THE CHICAGO STREET CIRCUIT

The Chicago Street Course represents a bold and innovative move in NASCAR’s effort to modernize the sport and reach new audiences. Introduced in 2023, the event made history as the first-ever NASCAR Cup Series street race – a format more commonly seen in Formula 1 or IndyCar.

Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, the temporary course uses existing city streets and passes by iconic landmarks like Grant Park, Buckingham Fountain, Columbus Drive, and Michigan Avenue. This unique setting combines big-city energy with the raw excitement of stock car racing, creating an experience unlike anything else on the NASCAR calendar.

The circuit measures 2.2 miles and features 12 turns, including sharp 90-degree corners, sweeping bends, and long straights. The layout demands precision, patience, and focus from drivers, especially with tight barriers, changing grip levels, and no room for mistakes. Overtaking is tough, so strategy and clean execution are key. Rain and weather can make things even more unpredictable, as seen during the event’s dramatic debut.

The inaugural race on July 2, 2023, was one of the season’s most talked-about moments. It was won by Shane van Gisbergen, a Supercars champion from New Zealand, who shocked the racing world by taking the win in his very first NASCAR Cup Series start. He became the first driver since Johnny Rutherford in 1963 to win his Cup debut. Van Gisbergen’s performance, especially in the wet and challenging conditions, instantly gave the event historic significance and proved that NASCAR street racing could deliver intense, world-class action.

The Chicago Street Race also brought new energy to the sport. It attracted a large mix of longtime NASCAR fans, newcomers, and curious city residents. Over the weekend, fans enjoyed live concerts, interactive exhibits, and a festival-style atmosphere that stretched far beyond the race track. The television broadcast drew over 4.6 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched NASCAR events of the year outside the Daytona 500.

While the first event faced some weather-related delays and logistical hurdles, NASCAR’s commitment to returning to Chicago showed the long-term vision behind the project. The race is now a major highlight of the summer schedule and stands as a symbol of NASCAR’s evolution, mixing tradition with fresh ideas to reach a broader, younger audience. With its unique location, technical layout, and unpredictable nature, the Chicago Street Course continues to build its reputation as one of the most exciting and distinctive stops in the NASCAR Cup Series.
