TRAFFIC RULES IN ILLINOIS

Don’t let a ticket ruin your NASCAR weekend in Chicago. Take a moment to review these important tips on how to stay safe and avoid penalties while driving in Illinois. While traffic laws in Illinois are similar to those across the U.S., there are a few rules and behaviors specific to the state. Here’s what you need to know:

Speed limits

Speed limits vary depending on the area and road type:

  • Residential areas: 25–30 mph (40–48 km/h)
  • Highways: 55–65 mph (89–105 km/h)
  • Interstates: 70 mph (113 km/h)

Always follow posted speed signs and adjust your speed based on weather or traffic conditions.

Traffic signals

You must obey all traffic lights and stop signs. Right turns on red are permitted after coming to a complete stop, unless a sign states otherwise. Always yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic when making turns.

Driving under the Influence

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly illegal. The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.08% for drivers aged 21 and older. For those under 21, stricter rules apply, and even a small amount of alcohol can result in penalties.

Seat belt laws

Illinois requires everyone in the vehicle – both in the front and back seats – to wear a seat belt. Violating this law can lead to a fine, even if you’re just a passenger.

Right of way

Drivers must always yield to:

  • Pedestrians in crosswalks
  • Vehicles have already stopped at intersections
  • At four-way stops, the first vehicle to arrive goes first. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the one on the right has the right of way.

If you're pulled over by the Police

If you're stopped by law enforcement, follow these steps for a smooth interaction:

  • Pull over safely. As soon as you see flashing lights, signal and move to the right-hand shoulder. Try to stop in a well-lit area if it’s nighttime.
  • Stay in your vehicle. Remain seated with your hands on the steering wheel. Keep your seat belt fastened and avoid sudden movements. At night, turning on your interior light can help the officer see you clearly.
  • Wait for instructions. Don’t reach for documents until asked. Be ready to provide your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance.
  • Be respectful and cooperative. Speak politely, stay calm, and don’t argue. Cooperation can go a long way.
  • If you receive a ticket. Stay calm. Signing the ticket simply confirms you received it – it’s not an admission of guilt. You can contest it later in court if you choose.
  • Know your rights. You have the right to remain silent. You can ask if you're free to go, but always follow the officer’s directions.
  • Document the stop if necessary. If you feel your rights were violated, write down details like the officer’s name, badge number, and patrol car number. You may file a complaint or consult an attorney afterward.
